Figure 1. Total open interest with an 8-week trend projection.

What does it measure?Open interest is the number of open futures contracts (live positions) in the market. It's the standard measure of how large and active it is — if it rises, the market is growing. The dotted line is a trend projection (not a forecast).

Figure 2. Retail participation (%) — is retail growing?

What does it measure? What % of the market is small traders (retail) vs. the big players (banks, funds). Proxy: the CFTC's "non-reportable" positions. If retail is small, there's room to grow.

Figure 3. Competitive share by exchange group (%).

What does it measure?Which exchange group holds the most open positions. It shows the head-to-head (CME Group vs ICE) and how it evolves. Click "venues" to break out the individual exchanges.

Methodology. The projection is a linear (least-squares) regression over the selected period, extended 8 weeks — it is a trend estimate, not a guaranteed forecast. Share by venue is the % of total open interest; "Other" = minor venues (CFTC US-reportable markets).

Methodology. Open interest and positions from the COT Legacy Futures-Only report, aggregated by venue, country, and asset class. “Country” is the exchange's domicile (US/UK), not the trader's — COT covers US-reportable markets. Global multi-country market share (Eurex-DE, Asia) requires FIA/per-exchange data (roadmap). The “retail proxy” is non-reportable positions.
